San Mateo County Unity Bar

The San Mateo County Unity Bar is one of a coalition of diverse bar associations of the California Unity Bar.  The San Mateo County chapter was formed on August 7, 2025 by committee members Tami Fisher, Brooke Murphy Kent, Elena Rivkin, and Vivian Wang.

We are excited to build this newest chapter of the Unity Bar, dedicated to fostering collaboration, mentorship and inclusion within the local legal community.

California Unity Bar

The California Unity Bar is committed to fostering a judiciary that reflects the communities it serves. Originally founded in 1987 in Sacramento by Jerry Chong, Judicial Appointment Secretary Luis Cespedes, and retired Judge Renard Shepard, the Unity Bar’s mission has remained steadfast: to unify ethnic and minority bar associations in their pursuit of a more equitable and inclusive judicial system.

The San Mateo County Unity Bar actively supports the appointment of diverse judicial candidates by advocating for nominees to the Superior Courts and District Courts of Appeal and defending judges facing unfair criticism.

The San Mateo County Unity Bar supports Governor Gavin Newsom’s vision for judicial diversity, inspired by Secretary Jenkins, who emphasized the importance of representation in the judiciary.

Through the combined efforts of Unity Bars across the state, we are shaping a judiciary that represents and upholds the ideals of justice for all.
